Clear, red eyes

Redness occurs when small blood vessels on the eye surface widen. Allergic conjunctivitis often affects both eyes and can bring itching and watering. Conjunctivitis may cause redness, discharge, grittiness, or eyelids sticking together. Dryness, smoke, dust, cosmetics, prolonged screen use, or a burst surface vessel can also create a red appearance. The degree of redness does not by itself identify the cause.

Wash your hands, avoid rubbing, and pause contact lenses until the eye feels normal and a clinician advises restarting. A cool clean compress may ease irritation and watering. Avoid sharing towels, pillows, eye cosmetics, or drops, particularly when infection is possible. Artificial tears may help dryness. Do not use someone else’s prescription drops; a pharmacist or clinician can recommend suitable treatment after considering the symptoms.

Seek urgent assessment for moderate or severe pain, light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, a chemical injury, penetrating injury, severe headache with nausea, or a red eye with contact-lens use and pain. Arrange review for persistent redness, recurrent episodes, marked discharge, or symptoms that are spreading to others. Rinse a chemical exposure with clean running water while obtaining urgent help.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergy, conjunctivitis, dryness, or another eye problem; whether you should use drops; when contact lenses can be resumed; and which changes require urgent care.
