What should you know about class four laser therapy?

Short answer

Class four laser therapy applies high-powered therapeutic light to a selected area, usually as one part of a broader rehabilitation plan.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

It is also called Class IV laser therapy or photobiomodulation. A trained practitioner selects the treatment area and device settings after assessing the problem; the laser does not replace diagnosis, exercise, load management, or other treatment that may be needed.

What the treatment involves

The device directs concentrated light through a handheld applicator. The practitioner may keep it moving or treat selected points, depending on the equipment and body area. Protective eyewear is required for everyone in the treatment space because direct or reflected laser light can injure the eyes.

People may notice warmth during application. Skin sensation should be monitored throughout, particularly if numbness, altered circulation, fragile skin, or medication makes heat harder to detect. Tell the practitioner promptly if the area feels uncomfortably hot or painful.

How to prepare and respond

Give the clinician a clear history of the injury, your symptoms, medical conditions, medicines, implanted devices, pregnancy status, and any change in skin sensation. The skin over the target area generally needs to be accessible and free of products that could interfere with assessment. Follow instructions about activity after treatment rather than assuming pain relief means the tissue can immediately tolerate heavier loading.

Agree on a practical goal such as easier walking, improved movement, or better exercise tolerance. Track function as well as pain. If there is no meaningful progress, the diagnosis and wider rehabilitation plan may need reassessment.

When to seek care

Stop the session and alert the practitioner if you develop burning pain, marked overheating, visual symptoms, dizziness, or sudden worsening. Seek urgent medical care for a new limb deformity, inability to bear weight after trauma, a cold or pale limb, rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness with fever, or new weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control. These features need assessment rather than laser treatment alone.

Questions to ask your clinician

Ask what diagnosis is being treated, what change you should expect in daily function, how progress will be measured, and which exercise or activity plan accompanies the laser. Also ask who operates the device, what eye protection is used, and what would prompt a change in treatment.

Questions people ask

Does class four laser therapy hurt?

The application may feel warm, but it should not cause burning or escalating pain. Tell the practitioner immediately if the heat becomes uncomfortable.

Can laser therapy replace physiotherapy exercises?

It may be included alongside rehabilitation, but it does not restore strength, movement control, or load tolerance by itself. Your plan may still include targeted exercise and activity changes.

Why is eye protection needed?

Class IV laser light can harm the eyes through direct or reflected exposure, so appropriate protective eyewear is needed during use.
