Claritin for a runny nose: what to know

Allergic rhinitis often causes clear drainage, sneezing, nasal itching, and symptoms that follow exposure to pollen, pets, or house dust mites. A common cold may add sore throat, cough, or feeling unwell. Influenza and COVID-19 can also cause respiratory symptoms, while sinusitis may bring facial pressure, thicker discharge, or symptoms that persist. A runny nose alone cannot distinguish these causes. Antihistamines work on histamine-related symptoms, so they are more useful for allergies than for every infectious or irritant trigger.

Use Claritin only according to its label or a pharmacist's advice, and check whether another product already contains an antihistamine. Saline nasal rinsing or spray may soothe irritation; use safe water and clean equipment for rinsing. Keep a note of triggers, duration, colour of discharge, associated pain, and whether symptoms improve away from the suspected trigger. Rest and drink fluids when an infection seems possible.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the mouth or throat, faintness, severe headache, confusion, or a serious allergic reaction. Arrange medical advice if symptoms last longer than expected, repeatedly return, cause significant facial pain, include one-sided foul-smelling discharge, or interfere with sleep and daily life. Ask about testing if infection is possible and you are at higher risk of complications.
