Circular Skin Rash: Causes, Care, and Warning Signs

Ringworm often has a scaly outer edge that gradually enlarges. Atopic Dermatitis may be intensely itchy and dry, while Contact Dermatitis follows exposure to something irritating or allergenic. Psoriasis can produce persistent, well-defined scale. Scabies is more likely to cause intense itch with involvement of close contacts or typical body sites. Drug Rash can begin after a medicine and may affect several areas.

Write down recent medicines, new skin products, travel, animal contact, sweating, and anyone else with itching. Keep nails short, wash gently, and avoid scratching. Do not share towels, clothes, or bedding until an infectious cause has been considered. A photo taken before treatment helps a clinician compare changes. Avoid combining several medicated creams because this can irritate skin and blur the pattern.

Arrange an appointment if the rash spreads, persists, recurs, affects a child or pregnant person, or involves the scalp, nails, or genitals. Seek urgent care for fever, severe pain, rapidly spreading warmth, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread blisters, peeling skin, or sores in the mouth or eyes.
