Ciprofloxacin for tonsillitis: what to know

Tonsillitis means inflammation of the tonsils and may result from a virus or bacteria. Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic for selected bacterial infections, but it is not routinely the first option for common tonsillitis. Strep throat is one possible bacterial cause, while symptoms such as sore throat, fever, swollen glands, or earache can occur with several illnesses. A clinician may examine your throat, consider the pattern of symptoms, and use testing when it would change treatment. Antibiotics cannot help a viral episode.

Arrange a GP consultation if the illness is severe, recurrent, or not settling. Do not start leftover ciprofloxacin or borrow it from another person. If a clinician prescribes it, follow the instructions and check how to separate it from antacids or mineral supplements. Tell the prescriber about pregnancy, allergies, kidney disease, tendon problems, nerve symptoms, heart-rhythm concerns, and other medicines. Rest, drink fluids, and use suitable symptom relief as advised. Report tendon pain, numbness, tingling, severe diarrhoea, or a widespread rash promptly.

Seek emergency help if you cannot breathe comfortably, cannot swallow saliva, are drooling, or develop fast-growing swelling of the throat or neck. Prompt medical review is needed for severe one-sided pain, a muffled voice, difficulty opening the mouth, dehydration, or a fever with pronounced weakness. These signs can point to an abscess or another complication requiring more than routine home care.

Ask whether the tonsillitis is likely viral or bacterial, whether a test is useful, why cipro or another antibiotic is being considered, and which changes mean you should return urgently.
