Ciprofloxacin for strep throat: what to know

Strep throat is caused by certain bacteria, while many sore throats are viral. Ciprofloxacin can act against some bacteria, but it is not routinely selected for this throat infection. A clinician may consider the examination, fever, swollen glands, cough pattern, exposure history, allergy history, and a throat test where appropriate. Tonsillitis can have several causes, and its appearance alone does not identify the germ. Using an unsuitable antibiotic may expose you to side effects without treating the illness.

Arrange a GP consultation if symptoms are significant, persistent, or difficult to manage. Do not use ciprofloxacin left from another prescription, and do not give your medicine to someone else. If it has been prescribed after an assessment, follow the label and ask before changing the dose or stopping. Mention pregnancy, medicine allergies, tendon problems, nerve symptoms, kidney disease, and other medicines. Fluids, rest, and suitable pain relief can help while you follow the clinician's plan. Seek advice for severe or unexpected diarrhoea, tendon pain, numbness, tingling, or a widespread rash.

Get emergency help if you are struggling to breathe, cannot swallow saliva, are drooling, or have rapidly increasing swelling in the throat or neck. Seek prompt assessment for severe one-sided throat pain, a muffled voice, inability to open your mouth normally, dehydration, or a fever with marked weakness. These features can indicate a complication rather than an uncomplicated sore throat.

Ask whether a throat test is needed, whether the illness looks like strep throat or another cause, why a particular antibiotic was chosen, and what symptoms should trigger review.
