Tell the injector about allergies, infection symptoms, skin problems near the joint, medicines that affect bleeding, previous injection reactions and whether the joint has recently become hot or very swollen. Ask which joint is being treated and what result is realistic for your pattern of pain.

After the procedure, follow the clinic's instructions on activity and dressings. Brief soreness or fullness can occur, so avoid testing the joint with unusually demanding activity straight away. Record changes in pain, swelling and mobility rather than judging the treatment from the first few hours.

Seek urgent clinical advice if pain or swelling becomes severe or continues to worsen, especially with redness, warmth, fever, discharge or feeling generally unwell. Emergency care is appropriate for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, collapse or another rapidly developing allergic reaction. New calf swelling, chest pain or sudden breathlessness also warrants urgent assessment.
