What should you know about chrysalis structures dermoscopy?

A dermatoscope magnifies and illuminates skin so a clinician can assess colours and structures that are difficult to see with the naked eye. Chrysalis structures, also called shiny white streaks, appear as pale lines or areas that may be easier to see with particular lighting or polarisation.

Their meaning depends on the whole lesion: symmetry, border, colours, network, vessels, growth and the person’s history all matter. The finding can occur in more than one type of lesion, so seeing it does not tell you that a mole is cancerous. A photograph or examination without dermoscopy may miss the context.

Do not scratch, pick or attempt to remove a lesion that has been flagged. Ask whether the clinician recommends a baseline image, a short-interval review, referral or removal for laboratory examination. Keep track of change in size, outline, colour, bleeding or symptoms, and protect the area from repeated injury.

If removal is advised, the method depends on the lesion’s location, depth and diagnostic needs. A removed specimen may be examined under a microscope; cosmetic removal without assessment is not suitable for every changing or uncertain lesion.

Book a dermatology assessment for a lesion that is changing, newly different from your other marks, bleeding, crusting, persistently itchy or painful, or not healing. Seek earlier review when changes are rapid or a lesion repeatedly catches on clothing. Urgent care is appropriate for heavy bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure.

Ask what other dermoscopic structures were present, whether the lesion should be photographed or removed, and how soon it should be reviewed. If removal is suggested, ask whether the tissue will be sent for pathology, what scar to expect, and which wound-care signs need attention.
