Short answer

Chronic tonsillitis is ongoing or repeatedly returning inflammation of the tonsils that can cause throat discomfort, swallowing problems, bad breath, or swollen neck glands.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What chronic tonsillitis means

The tonsils are small areas of immune tissue at the back of the throat. With chronic tonsillitis, inflammation may persist between episodes or return repeatedly. A sore throat, unpleasant breath, tonsil debris, tender or swollen glands, earache, fever, and discomfort when swallowing can occur. Symptoms may be mild on some days and more troublesome during a flare. Viral infections are common causes of tonsillitis; bacterial infections, including strep throat, can also be involved. Symptoms alone cannot reliably identify the cause, so an examination may be needed.

A GP can inspect the throat, ask how often symptoms return, and check whether another throat condition could explain them. Mention snoring, disturbed sleep, difficulty eating or drinking, or missed school and work, because these details help show how the problem affects daily life.

What you can do

Arrange a GP consultation if symptoms keep returning, do not settle, or interfere with eating, sleeping, speaking, or normal activities. Until you are assessed, drink fluids, choose soft foods if swallowing hurts, rest, and avoid smoke or other throat irritants. Gargling with warm salt water may soothe an adult or older child who can gargle safely. Use pain relief only as directed on the label or by a clinician, taking age and health conditions into account.

Do not start leftover antibiotics. They do not treat viral infections and may be unsuitable when the cause has not been checked. If a clinician identifies a bacterial infection, they can explain whether antibiotic treatment is appropriate and how to take it.

When to seek care urgently

Seek urgent medical help if you cannot swallow liquids or saliva, are drooling, have trouble breathing, develop rapidly increasing swelling in the throat or neck, or cannot open your mouth normally. Seek prompt assessment for severe one-sided throat pain, a muffled voice, marked weakness, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine and dizziness. These features can signal a complication or a different problem requiring immediate treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what may be causing the repeated inflammation, whether a throat swab or other test is useful, and how to manage symptoms during a flare. You can also ask what signs should trigger urgent care, whether your symptoms suggest a need for specialist review, and how to record episodes so future decisions are based on a clear pattern.

Questions people ask

Can chronic tonsillitis be caused by a virus?

Yes. Viruses commonly cause tonsillitis, while some episodes are linked with bacteria. An examination can help guide management.

Do repeated episodes always need antibiotics?

No. Antibiotics do not help viral infections and are used only when a clinician considers a bacterial infection likely or confirms it.

When should tonsils be assessed?

Arrange assessment when throat symptoms keep returning, persist, affect daily activities, or make swallowing difficult.
