What should you know about chronic sneezing?

Sneezing is a reflex that clears irritants from the nose. Allergic rhinitis may cause repeated sneezing with an itchy nose, watery eyes or clear drainage. House dust mite allergy can be worse in bedrooms or during cleaning, while pet allergy may follow contact with an animal or its environment. A common cold can also cause sneezing, usually alongside other short-lived symptoms. Dry air, smoke, fragrances and nasal sprays can irritate the lining without an allergy being present.

Keep a simple diary of where you were, what you encountered, and whether itching, eye symptoms or congestion appeared. Reduce smoke and strong scents, wash hands after likely exposures, and keep sleeping areas clean. If a clinician or pharmacist recommends allergy medication, use it as directed and check whether it causes drowsiness. Avoid adding several products at once. A review is useful when sneezing continues, disrupts sleep, affects breathing, or is accompanied by persistent nasal discharge.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction. Arrange medical review for recurrent nosebleeds, wheezing, facial pain, fever that persists, or symptoms that remain despite avoiding suspected triggers. Tell the clinician if one nostril is consistently affected or if smell has changed.
