Short answer

Chronic prostatitis can cause persistent pelvic or urinary symptoms and deserves a tailored medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Being unable to pass urine

The short answer

Symptoms may interfere with sitting, sleep, sexual activity, work, or confidence, but there are several ways to investigate and manage them.

What chronic prostatitis can involve

The prostate is a gland below the bladder. Chronic prostatitis is a broad term for ongoing inflammation, irritation, or pain linked to the prostate and nearby pelvic muscles. Some cases involve a bacterial infection; many do not show a continuing infection.

People with chronic prostatitis may notice aching or pressure in the lower pelvis, between the scrotum and anus, lower back, penis, or testicles. Urinary symptoms can include burning, a weak stream, needing to urinate often, or a sudden need to go. Symptoms can vary from day to day.

How assessment and treatment work

A clinician will ask about the pattern of pain, urinary changes, sexual symptoms, medicines, and recent infections. Assessment may include an abdominal and genital examination, a prostate examination when appropriate, and urine testing to look for infection or other explanations.

Treatment is chosen according to the findings. It may include pain relief, medicines that relax the urinary outlet, treatment for constipation, pelvic-floor physiotherapy, or antibiotics when a bacterial infection is suspected or confirmed. Keep a brief symptom diary, including triggers such as prolonged sitting, stress, caffeine, alcohol, or cycling, to make the consultation more useful.

When to get medical help

Arrange a medical review for persistent pelvic pain, recurrent urinary discomfort, or symptoms that affect daily life. A review is also sensible before taking leftover antibiotics, because the right treatment depends on whether infection is present.

Seek urgent care if you cannot pass urine, develop fever or chills with urinary symptoms, see blood in the urine, have severe testicular swelling or pain, or become suddenly much more unwell. These signs need prompt assessment for causes that may require urgent treatment.

Useful questions for your appointment

Ask what diagnoses are being considered, whether a urine test or other test is useful, and which symptoms should prompt urgent care. You can also ask whether pelvic-floor assessment, changes to bladder habits, or a referral to a urology specialist could help in your situation.

Questions people ask

Does chronic prostatitis always mean there is an infection?

No. Ongoing prostatitis symptoms can occur without a continuing bacterial infection. Testing and the overall symptom pattern help a clinician decide whether antibiotics are appropriate.

Can lifestyle changes help with chronic prostatitis symptoms?

They may help some people. Avoiding personal triggers, taking regular movement breaks, managing constipation, and using relaxation or pelvic-floor strategies can form part of an individual plan.
