Short answer

Chronic postpartum depression is depression after childbirth that continues or remains untreated, and recovery is possible with appropriate mental health care and practical support.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Core feature
Low mood or loss of interest persists and interferes with daily life.
Care
Treatment can include therapy, medication, follow-up and practical support.
Emergency
Thoughts of harm or loss of contact with reality require immediate help.

The short answer

It is more persistent and disruptive than the brief emotional changes many people experience soon after delivery. It can affect sleep beyond the baby's waking pattern, motivation, concentration, relationships, bonding and the ability to manage everyday care.

Recognising depression that persists after birth

Postpartum depression may present with ongoing low mood, loss of interest or pleasure, guilt, hopelessness, irritability, anxiety, withdrawal or feeling unable to cope. Some people feel emotionally distant from their baby; this is a symptom that deserves compassionate care, not evidence of being a bad parent.

Symptoms may begin during pregnancy or emerge after delivery, and they can continue when support is delayed or treatment does not yet meet the person's needs. Physical recovery, feeding demands, fragmented sleep, pain, relationship strain and limited practical help can add to the burden, but depression is treatable.

How to get effective support

Tell a healthcare professional clearly how long symptoms have lasted and how they affect sleep, eating, self-care, work, relationships and care of the baby. A GP, obstetric clinician or perinatal mental health service can assess depression, anxiety, trauma symptoms, physical contributors and immediate safety.

Care may combine talking therapy, medication, planned follow-up and practical help with rest and caregiving. If you are breastfeeding, ask about medicine choices that account for feeding and your own health. Involve a trusted person who can attend appointments, notice changes and take over specific tasks when symptoms are heavy.

When to get urgent help

Get emergency help immediately if you may harm yourself or the baby, cannot keep either of you safe, feel detached from reality, hear or see things others do not, have severely confused thoughts, or hold unusual fixed beliefs. Stay with a trusted adult, place the baby somewhere safe, and contact local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department.

Planning your clinical review

Ask which treatment fits your symptoms, how progress will be monitored, what to do if the first approach does not help, and who to contact between appointments. Discuss feeding, contraception, other medicines, previous mental health episodes and plans for future pregnancies so care can be coordinated.

Questions people ask

Can postpartum depression last for a long time?

Yes. Symptoms can persist, especially when care is delayed or the current treatment is not effective enough. A fresh assessment can identify unmet needs and adjust the support plan.

Can I receive treatment while breastfeeding?

Often, yes. Talking therapies do not depend on feeding method, and a clinician can discuss medication choices using your symptoms, health, other medicines and how the baby is fed.

Does difficulty bonding mean I am a bad parent?

No. Feeling numb, distant or overwhelmed can occur with postpartum depression. Sharing this honestly helps the care team support both your recovery and your relationship with the baby.
