What should you know about chronic itchy eyes?

Allergic conjunctivitis can cause itching, redness, watering, and puffy eyelids, often in both eyes. Allergic rhinitis may add sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, and an itchy throat. House dust mites and pet allergens can trigger symptoms indoors, while other airborne allergens may worsen them outdoors or seasonally. Dryness, smoke, cosmetics, contact lenses, and rubbing can irritate the eye surface. Thick discharge, marked pain, light sensitivity, or one-sided symptoms may point away from a simple allergy and should be assessed. Itchy eyes are a symptom rather than a diagnosis, so the setting, timing, discharge, and vision changes are useful clues.

Avoid rubbing your eyes, wash your hands before touching them, and use a cool clean compress for comfort. Pause eye makeup and contact lenses while the eyes are irritated. Reduce exposure to a suspected trigger: keep pets away from the bedroom, wash bedding regularly, and limit dust when cleaning. Rinse the face after outdoor exposure and keep windows closed when a known trigger is present. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether allergy medication or lubricating drops are suitable; use eye products as directed and avoid sharing them. Persistent or recurrent symptoms may need an eye examination.

Seek urgent eye care for sudden vision change, severe pain, strong light sensitivity, an injury, chemical exposure, or swelling that affects opening the eye. Arrange a prompt appointment for thick discharge, worsening redness, symptoms in one eye, contact-lens-related discomfort, or symptoms that keep returning. Emergency help is needed if eye swelling occurs with breathing difficulty, faintness, or swelling of the lips or tongue, which can signal a serious allergic reaction.
