What should you know about chronic exfoliative cheilitis?

Short answer
Chronic exfoliative cheilitis is persistent inflammation that makes the lips peel, crack, feel dry, and need careful evaluation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance

- The vermilion and surrounding lip skin
- Typical concern
- Recurring peeling with dryness or tenderness
- Useful first step
- Remove irritants and use bland protection
What it can mean
The lips may shed thin layers repeatedly, leaving tenderness, redness, crusting or a tight sensation. Lip licking, picking, irritating cosmetics, contact allergy, dry air and an underlying skin condition can keep the surface inflamed. Peeling alone does not identify one cause, so a clinician may ask about products, habits, medicines and symptoms elsewhere on the skin. Persistent cheilitis can resemble infection or another inflammatory lip disorder, which is why a lasting change deserves an examination.
What you can do
Stop peeling or biting the loose skin, and avoid fragranced balms, flavouring agents and products that sting. Apply a bland protective ointment often, especially after eating, drinking and washing; an emollient helps reduce water loss and friction. Protect the lips from wind and strong sun, drink normally, and note which products or habits precede flares. A dermatologist may recommend a short, carefully chosen topical corticosteroid when inflammation is prominent; use it only as directed because lip skin is delicate.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical review when peeling keeps returning, does not settle with gentle protection, or interferes with eating, speaking or sleep. Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness, pus, fever, marked pain, bleeding that does not stop, or a firm sore that does not heal. Bring the lip products and medicines you use so possible irritants and treatment choices can be discussed.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be contact allergy, eczema, infection or another form of cheilitis? Which ingredients should I avoid? Is an emollient enough, or would a topical corticosteroid be appropriate? How long should I use the treatment, and what changes would require reassessment?

Questions people ask
Can chronic exfoliative cheilitis be caused by lip licking?
Repeated wetting and drying can weaken the lip barrier and help maintain irritation, although other causes may also be present.
What type of moisturiser is suitable?
A bland, fragrance-free ointment is usually less irritating than flavoured or tingling lip products; a clinician can tailor care if symptoms persist.
