What should you know about chronic brucellosis?

Brucellosis is an infection that can follow contact with infected animals or unpasteurised animal products. In some people, symptoms continue, return, or affect particular organs after the initial illness. Ongoing fever, night sweats, fatigue, muscle aches, or joint pain may occur, but these symptoms have many possible causes.

Tell the clinician about travel, animal contact, raw dairy products, previous brucellosis, and when symptoms started. Assessment may include a blood test and other tests guided by your examination. Do not try to confirm or treat this infection from symptoms alone.

Arrange medical review if symptoms persist or recur, especially after a relevant exposure. If brucellosis is diagnosed, take the full antibiotic treatment exactly as prescribed and attend follow-up appointments; treatment may involve more than one medicine and requires careful completion. Rest, drink fluids if able, and record temperature patterns, sweats, pain, and any new symptoms.

Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, chest pain, a severe headache, or sudden neurological symptoms. Contact a clinician promptly for continuing fever, worsening joint pain, repeated night sweats, or symptoms returning after treatment.
