Choroidal ocular melanoma explained

It belongs to the group called uveal melanomas and is biologically different from melanoma that starts in the skin. Some tumours are found during a routine eye examination, while others affect vision.

An ophthalmic oncologist examines the inside of the eye and may use eye ultrasound, retinal photography, or other imaging to record the tumour's location and features. A tissue sample is not required in every case, although it may be considered when the diagnosis or tumour biology needs clarification.

Assessment also checks whether the tumour has affected nearby eye structures or spread beyond the eye. The findings guide treatment and establish a baseline for follow-up imaging.

Care is tailored to tumour size, position, vision in both eyes, general health, and evidence of spread. Options can include plaque brachytherapy placed close to the tumour, external radiotherapy, laser-based treatment in selected situations, observation of an uncertain small lesion, or surgery that removes part or all of the affected eye.

Attend both eye and oncology follow-up, even when vision feels unchanged. Monitoring may cover the treated eye, the other eye, and organs where this cancer can spread. Report side effects early because support may protect comfort and remaining vision.

Obtain urgent eye care for sudden loss of vision, a dark curtain across sight, a rapid shower of new floaters, flashing lights with reduced vision, severe eye pain, or a red painful eye after treatment. These symptoms can reflect problems that need prompt examination, regardless of their cause.

Ask what supports the diagnosis, whether additional imaging or a sample is useful, which treatments could preserve the eye or vision, and how each option may affect daily activities. Clarify the schedule for eye checks and monitoring beyond the eye.
