What should you know about the chorionic villus sampling test?

CVS is invasive because an instrument enters the uterus to reach the placenta. Ultrasound helps the clinician select a safe path, but the procedure still has possible complications that should be considered alongside the value of receiving diagnostic information.

For abdominal sampling, the clinician passes a thin needle through the abdominal wall. For cervical sampling, a narrow tube or forceps passes through the vagina and cervix. Placental location and clinical factors determine which approach is suitable; this is not a route the patient needs to choose alone.

The laboratory tests the villus cells for agreed targets. Some analyses return sooner than others, and an unusual or inconclusive finding may lead to additional interpretation or another diagnostic procedure. A result within the expected range only addresses the conditions examined.

Read the consent information and ask the clinician to separate screening findings from diagnostic findings. Confirm which laboratory tests are planned, how discomfort is managed, and whom to contact after leaving. Mention medicines that affect clotting, allergies, blood-group information, and any new pregnancy symptoms.

Once home, follow personalised instructions about rest, work, travel, exercise, bathing, and sex. Gentle planning can make recovery easier: have suitable pain relief available, avoid a demanding schedule, and arrange help with dependants if the clinic recommends limiting activity.

Seek urgent advice for heavy vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, pronounced or increasing abdominal pain, fever, chills, foul discharge, or repeated uterine tightening. Emergency assessment is appropriate for collapse, marked weakness, breathing difficulty, or any symptom that becomes severe quickly.

Do not use the expected-results date as a reason to postpone care. The laboratory process and assessment of post-procedure symptoms are separate, and the maternity service can advise where you should be examined.

Ask what question CVS would answer in your pregnancy, how reliable the planned analysis is for that target, and what its limitations are. Clarify the alternatives, including amniocentesis, as well as what support is available if the finding is affected, uncertain, or unexpected.
