What should you know about chorionic villus sampling (CVS)?

It may be offered after a screening result, ultrasound finding, previous pregnancy history, or known family condition. Having CVS is a personal choice, and informed consent should cover its limits, possible outcomes, and procedure-related risks.

A screening result describes possibility; CVS directly studies cells from chorionic villi in the placenta. The test can therefore confirm or exclude the particular conditions covered by the analysis, although it cannot give a complete prediction of a baby's future health.

Sampling is performed with ultrasound guidance. Depending on where the placenta lies, a thin needle may pass through the abdomen or a slender instrument may pass through the cervix. The sample then goes to a laboratory, where different parts of the analysis can have different reporting times.

Consider what information you want from testing and how each possible result might affect your decisions or pregnancy care. Request a clear explanation of the proposed analysis, possible uncertain findings, the sampling route, discomfort relief, aftercare, and alternatives.

On the day, follow instructions about eating, drinking, and bladder filling. Give the team an up-to-date medicine list and mention blood-thinning treatment, allergies, rhesus-negative blood, vaginal bleeding, or infection symptoms. Afterward, use only pain relief considered suitable in pregnancy and follow the centre's activity advice.

Call your maternity service without delay for heavy bleeding, loss of clear fluid, worsening cramps, strong abdominal pain, fever, chills, unpleasant-smelling vaginal discharge, or regular tightening after the procedure. If you feel faint, seriously unwell, or unable to obtain urgent maternity advice, seek emergency care.

Light spotting and short-lived cramping may happen, but a change in severity or persistence is a reason to check with the clinical team rather than assuming it is expected.

You can ask why CVS is being offered now, whether genetic counselling would help, what happens if placental cells give an unclear or unexpected finding, and how results will be communicated. Ask how CVS compares with amniocentesis for your specific testing aim rather than comparing the procedures in general.
