Shoulder chondrosarcoma symptoms: what to notice

The discomfort may become more noticeable over time or interfere with sleep and ordinary tasks. Many non-cancerous shoulder problems cause similar features, and examination is needed to distinguish among them.

A cartilage tumour can arise in bones around the shoulder, including the upper arm bone or shoulder blade. Its location may produce a deep ache, a palpable firm area, weakness from pain, or difficulty lifting and rotating the arm.

Clinical assessment separates joint, tendon, nerve, and bone-related causes. The clinician may compare both shoulders, check the lump and range of movement, and arrange imaging. When imaging raises concern, biopsy planning is normally coordinated with the team that would provide definitive care.

Book an assessment if pain does not settle as expected, becomes progressively stronger, wakes you, or accompanies a new or enlarging mass. Record when symptoms occur, which movements are limited, and whether numbness, weakness, fever, or recent trauma is present.

Until reviewed, avoid repeatedly pressing or forcefully manipulating a lump. If chondrosarcoma is diagnosed, a specialist team considers the tumour's exact anatomy and grade when discussing removal, reconstruction, rehabilitation, and whether radiation has a role.

Promptly seek medical care for a mass that grows quickly, pain that becomes severe, or new tingling, numbness, hand weakness, or marked arm swelling. Emergency assessment is warranted if the arm suddenly becomes cold, pale, or blue, or if major weakness follows an injury.

You might ask whether the change appears to come from bone or soft tissue, which scans can map its relationship to the joint and nerves, and whether biopsy should occur at a sarcoma centre. Also ask how any proposed treatment could affect arm function and what rehabilitation support would follow.
