Chondrosarcoma of the ribs: symptoms and next steps

Pain can be felt at rest or with movement and may gradually become more noticeable. These symptoms have many possible causes, so they require clinical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

A tumour arising from cartilage in the chest wall can irritate nearby tissue or create outward swelling as it enlarges. Depending on its position, discomfort may worsen with deep breathing, coughing, twisting, or pressure over the area.

A clinician will examine the chest wall and ask when the change began, whether it is progressing, and how it affects breathing or daily movement. Imaging helps define the rib and surrounding structures; a tissue sample may be needed to identify the diagnosis.

Arrange a medical appointment for a lump that is new or enlarging, or pain that persists, returns, or disrupts sleep and activity. Note the exact location, triggers, progression, and any previous injury or surgery so the clinician can compare possible explanations.

If chondrosarcoma is confirmed, planning usually involves a specialist sarcoma team. Management is tailored to the tumour's site, extent, and grade, with surgery often central to treatment and selected radiation techniques considered in particular circumstances.

Seek urgent assessment for rapidly increasing swelling, severe or escalating pain, new weakness or numbness, or fever with a painful swollen area. Call emergency services for sudden major breathing difficulty, fainting, bluish lips, or severe chest pain, because these symptoms need immediate evaluation regardless of their cause.

Ask which part of the rib or chest wall appears affected, what imaging is needed, and whether referral to a sarcoma service is appropriate. If a biopsy is proposed, ask who will plan its route and how its result will guide surgery or radiation decisions.
