Cholestyramine for diaper rash: what to know

Cholestyramine is a medicine that binds bile acids in the gut. In some children or adults with frequent watery stools, bile acids can remain in the stool and irritate already fragile skin. A clinician may therefore consider a topical compounded preparation as part of a plan for a stubborn rash, particularly when ordinary barrier care has not been enough. This is different from taking the medicine by mouth, and a prescribed topical product should be used exactly as directed. Change wet or soiled nappies promptly, rinse gently with lukewarm water when possible, and pat rather than rub.
