What should you know about a cholesterol particle test?

Short answer

A cholesterol particle test examines lipoprotein particles to add detail when a standard cholesterol result leaves questions.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

What it measures
Lipoprotein particles carrying cholesterol through the blood.
How to read it
Use the laboratory range and the rest of your cardiovascular assessment.

What particles tell you

Cholesterol travels through the blood inside lipoproteins. Particle testing may estimate the number or type of particles carrying cholesterol, rather than only measuring the amount of cholesterol inside them. This can provide extra context when the usual lipid profile and the wider clinical picture do not seem to match.

The result is not interpreted in isolation. Family history, diabetes, blood pressure, smoking, kidney health, medicines and previous vascular disease still matter. Different laboratories may report different particle measures, so use the report’s own explanation and reference range.

Using the result well

Ask why the test was requested and which decision it may change. Check whether fasting is needed and tell the clinician about medicines, supplements and recent illness. Keep the particle report with your ordinary lipid results so trends can be compared. Food choices rich in fibre, regular activity, avoiding tobacco and taking prescribed treatment as directed support cardiovascular care. A standard [Cholesterol Test](/treatments/diagnostics-and-screening/cholesterol-test/) may remain the main follow-up measure; [Statin Therapy](/treatments/medical-management/statin-therapy/) may be discussed when overall risk warrants medicine.

When not to wait

Book a review if the particle result is unexpected, if close relatives developed vascular disease early, or if you are unsure how to use prescribed treatment. Get urgent help for chest pressure, sudden breathlessness, fainting, or sudden facial drooping, weakness or trouble speaking. A particle result should never delay assessment of these symptoms.

Questions for the appointment

Which particle is being measured? Why is this test useful for me? Does it change my treatment or only refine risk assessment? How does it compare with my LDL and triglycerides? When should the measurement be repeated?

Questions people ask

Is a particle test the same as a normal cholesterol test?

No. A standard panel measures cholesterol and triglycerides, while particle testing adds information about the carriers of cholesterol.

Does a particle result replace LDL?

Usually it is considered alongside the standard panel rather than replacing the clinician’s full assessment.
