What should you know about cholera in Zanzibar?

Cholera bacteria are swallowed through contaminated water or food, often where sewage and drinking-water systems meet. The illness can cause large fluid losses quickly. Travel-related diarrhoea has several possible causes, so a clinician may assess the full history.

Drink sealed or reliably treated water and use it for teeth cleaning and ice. Wash hands with soap, eat food cooked and served hot, peel fruit yourself, and avoid raw foods washed in uncertain water. Start safe fluids and Oral Rehydration Therapy as advised if diarrhoea begins.

Seek immediate assessment for profuse watery diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, severe thirst, very little urine, dizziness, fainting, confusion, or inability to drink. Mention travel and water exposure. Severe dehydration may require IV Fluid Therapy.

Ask which water sources are safe, whether symptoms need testing, how to rehydrate, and where urgent care is available locally. If symptoms continue or worsen, arrange medical review promptly and take details of recent meals, water sources, and travel.
