Who can get cholera?

Short answer
Cholera can affect anyone exposed to contaminated water or food. Risk is shaped mainly by sanitation, water safety, food handling, and the intensity of exposure rather than by a person’s identity alone. Some infected people have mild symptoms, while others develop sudden, large-volume watery diarrhoea.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Who is susceptible
- Anyone exposed to contaminated food or water
- Most urgent problem
- Dehydration from fluid and salt loss
- First response
- Start safe fluids and seek advice promptly
People who need extra caution
Infants and young children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with chronic illness may have less reserve when fluid is lost. A person who cannot drink, is vomiting repeatedly, or is already dehydrated needs rapid clinical assessment. Household members should use careful hand hygiene and safe water while illness is being assessed.
What to do after possible exposure
Begin frequent sips of safe fluids if diarrhoea starts, and follow local medical advice rather than waiting for weakness to become severe. Oral Rehydration Therapy is designed to replace water and salts lost through diarrhoea. Keep food preparation separate, clean shared toilet surfaces, and wash hands with soap after toileting.
Warning signs
Get urgent care for very watery diarrhoea, inability to keep fluids down, intense thirst, dry mouth, little or dark urine, dizziness, fainting, confusion, or unusual drowsiness. A child who is difficult to wake or cannot drink needs immediate attention. Severe dehydration may need IV Fluid Therapy and monitoring.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how your symptoms fit cholera or another infection, how much fluid to take, how to protect household contacts, and where urgent treatment is available.

Yes. Previous good health does not prevent infection after swallowing contaminated water or food.
Who should seek help earliest?
People with heavy diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, reduced urine, confusion, or difficulty drinking should seek urgent care; children and frail adults need particularly close attention.
