Where is cholera found?

A location may have cholera activity without every person becoming ill. Infection is acquired by swallowing the bacterium, not by breathing the same air as someone who is sick. Sudden watery diarrhoea can cause fluid loss quickly, so diarrhoea after possible exposure deserves prompt attention.

Use sealed, treated, or safely boiled water for drinking, brushing teeth, and making ice. Wash hands with soap after using the toilet and before preparing food. Eat food that is thoroughly cooked and served hot; peel fruit yourself and avoid raw foods washed in uncertain water. Oral Rehydration Therapy can replace lost fluid if diarrhoea begins.

Seek urgent medical care for profuse watery diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, marked thirst, very little urine, dizziness, confusion, fainting, or unusual sleepiness. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with another illness can become dehydrated quickly. Severe dehydration may require IV Fluid Therapy in a medical setting.
