How long does the cholera vaccine last?

A vaccine lowers the chance of cholera but does not make contaminated food or water safe. Protection can vary between products and may be less reliable when the recommended course is incomplete. A past course does not automatically cover a later trip or a new exposure; a travel clinician can check whether a booster or a fresh course is appropriate.

Cholera is caused by bacteria that can spread through unsafe water or food. Vaccination works alongside careful handwashing, safe drinking water, and well-cooked food. It does not treat diarrhoea that has already started.

Bring your vaccination record to a travel or primary-care appointment. Mention your destination, departure date, age, pregnancy or breastfeeding, immune conditions, and medicines. Follow the product-specific instructions about doses and timing, and do not assume that one brand can be substituted for another without advice.

During travel, use sealed or appropriately treated water and avoid raw foods that may have been washed in unsafe water. If loose stools begin, start oral rehydration promptly and seek local medical advice.

Get urgent medical help for frequent watery diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, very little urine, severe weakness, or signs of dehydration. These symptoms can worsen quickly, especially in children, older adults, and people with other illnesses. Treatment may include oral rehydration or IV fluid therapy; vaccination does not replace either treatment.
