What should you know about cholera toxin symptoms?

Short answer
Cholera toxin draws water and salts into the bowel, causing sudden watery diarrhoea that can rapidly lead to dehydration.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Key mechanism
- Water and salts move into the bowel
- Typical concern
- Watery diarrhoea with dehydration
- Early action
- Small, frequent sips of oral rehydration solution
How the symptoms develop
Most people with cholera notice large-volume watery diarrhoea, while some also have vomiting, thirst, muscle cramps, weakness, or dizziness. Fever is not required. As dehydration progresses, urination may decrease and the person may become drowsy, confused, or faint. Infants, children, older adults, and people with chronic illness can deteriorate quickly. Diagnosis depends on clinical assessment and, when appropriate, laboratory testing.
What to do when symptoms start
Use oral rehydration solution in frequent small sips as soon as watery diarrhoea begins. If vomiting occurs, pause briefly and try again with smaller amounts rather than abandoning fluids. Keep preparing food for others to a minimum, clean bathroom surfaces, and wash hands thoroughly. Medical advice is needed promptly because the amount of fluid lost can be difficult to replace at home. IV fluid therapy may be needed when dehydration is severe or oral fluids cannot be kept down.
Warning signs
Go to urgent care for fainting, confusion, extreme weakness, very little urine, a rapid heartbeat, inability to drink, repeated vomiting, or ongoing profuse diarrhoea. Seek advice without delay for a child, frail adult, or pregnant person with these symptoms. Mention possible exposure to untreated water, raw food, or a person with cholera-like illness.
Useful questions
Ask how much oral rehydration solution to offer, which dehydration signs to watch for, whether stool testing is appropriate, and whether medicines are suitable for the patient’s age and health. Ask when normal meals and activities can resume.

Questions people ask
Does cholera toxin always cause fever?
No. Cholera may cause severe watery diarrhoea without fever, so hydration signs deserve attention.
Why can vomiting be dangerous?
Vomiting removes additional water and salts and may prevent a person from drinking enough to replace losses.
