Short answer

Cholera is an intestinal infection that can cause sudden watery diarrhoea and dangerous fluid loss, so prompt rehydration and medical care matter.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main concern
Rapid dehydration from watery diarrhoea and vomiting
First response
Begin oral rehydration and arrange prompt medical advice
Spread prevention
Safe water, safe food, and careful handwashing

What cholera means

The main danger is loss of water and salts rather than the bowel symptoms alone. Dehydration may cause a dry mouth, reduced urination, dizziness, unusual sleepiness, a fast heartbeat, or difficulty staying alert. Cholera can occur without fever, so the absence of fever does not rule it out. A clinician may assess symptoms, hydration, travel or outbreak exposure, and may arrange testing.

What to do now

Start an oral rehydration solution if diarrhoea or vomiting is present, using the product instructions and small frequent sips. Continue breastfeeding when relevant and use safe drinking water. Do not delay medical assessment while trying home fluids. Severe dehydration may require IV fluid therapy, and a clinician may prescribe other treatment according to the illness and local guidance. Wash hands with soap and water after using the toilet and before preparing food.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical care for repeated watery stools, inability to drink, persistent vomiting, faintness, confusion, very little urine, marked weakness, or signs of dehydration. Get help promptly after possible exposure if symptoms begin, even when the illness seems mild. Tell the healthcare team about recent travel, unsafe water or food exposure, and anyone else who is ill.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which rehydration fluid is suitable, how to monitor urine and alertness, whether testing is needed, and which foods or medicines to avoid. If travel is planned, ask about destination-specific prevention advice and whether vaccination is appropriate for your itinerary.

Questions people ask

Can cholera be treated?

Yes. Replacing lost water and salts is central, with IV fluids used when drinking is not enough or dehydration is severe. Additional treatment is decided by a clinician.

Can cholera spread between people?

It can spread when stool from an infected person contaminates hands, food, or water. Handwashing and safe sanitation reduce that route.
