What should you know about cholera skin?

Cholera is an intestinal infection, so a rash or isolated skin change is not its defining feature. Frequent watery stools and vomiting can remove water and electrolytes from the body. As dehydration progresses, the mouth may become dry, the eyes may look sunken, and the skin may feel less supple. Infants and young children can show reduced tears or fewer wet nappies. A person may also look weak, pale, or unusually sleepy. These findings reflect fluid loss rather than a skin infection. Other illnesses can also cause rashes or dry skin, so a new skin change deserves separate clinical assessment.

Treat the fluid loss rather than trying to apply creams to the skin. Begin correctly prepared oral rehydration solution in frequent small sips and continue breastfeeding when relevant. Do not rely on plain water alone after substantial diarrhoea because the body also loses salts. Avoid sharing food or utensils, wash hands with soap and water, and clean contaminated areas.
