What should you know about cholera plague?

Short answer

Cholera is an intestinal infection that can cause sudden watery diarrhoea and dangerous dehydration, so prompt rehydration and medical care matter.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What cholera means

Cholera is caused by bacteria that can enter the body through contaminated food or water. Some people have mild illness, while others lose large amounts of fluid and salts through repeated watery stools, sometimes with vomiting. The main danger is dehydration rather than the bowel infection alone. Dry mouth, intense thirst, reduced urination, weakness, dizziness, or unusual sleepiness can signal fluid loss. Cholera is not the same as plague; it mainly affects the intestines and spreads through unsafe water or food and poor sanitation.

What to do now

Start an approved oral rehydration solution as soon as significant diarrhoea begins, taking frequent small sips and following the packet directions. Continue breastfeeding when relevant and use safe food and drinking water. Do not delay medical assessment because the stool looks watery or painless. A clinician may assess hydration, provide antibiotics in selected cases, and arrange IV fluid therapy when drinking cannot replace the losses. Wash hands carefully after using the toilet and before preparing food, and avoid preparing food for others while ill.

When urgent care is needed

Seek urgent care for very frequent watery stools, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, severe weakness, inability to drink, little or no urine, sunken eyes, or cold hands and feet. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with another serious illness can become dehydrated quickly. Emergency assessment is also appropriate when diarrhoea follows a suspected contaminated-water exposure or occurs in more than one person in a household. Bring information about when symptoms started, what was swallowed, and how much fluid has been taken.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your hydration level needs monitoring, whether testing is useful, and which rehydration product is suitable. You can also ask when IV fluid therapy is needed, whether medication is appropriate, and how to protect household members from contaminated water or food.

Questions people ask

Can cholera be treated?

Yes. Replacing lost fluids and salts is the central treatment, with additional medical treatment chosen for the individual situation.

Can cholera spread at home?

It can spread when contaminated stool reaches hands, food, water, or shared surfaces, so handwashing and safe sanitation are essential.
