What complications can cholera cause?

Short answer
Cholera complications mainly result from rapid loss of water and salts through diarrhoea and vomiting.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main complication
- Dehydration
- Other effects
- Salt imbalance, cramps, weakness, and shock
- Early response
- Prompt fluid and salt replacement
Possible complications
The central complication is dehydration. As the body loses fluid, a person may develop intense thirst, dry mouth, weakness, dizziness, reduced urine, a fast heartbeat, low blood pressure, or confusion. Severe dehydration can impair blood flow to vital organs and may lead to shock, which is an emergency.
Loss of salts can cause muscle cramps, profound tiredness, and changes in alertness. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with another illness may become unwell more quickly. The severity of complications depends on how much fluid is lost and how quickly it is replaced, not simply on the number of stools.
How complications are managed
Begin oral rehydration solution promptly when watery diarrhoea starts, following the product directions and taking small, frequent sips if vomiting occurs. Continue seeking clinical advice because fluid needs can change rapidly. A healthcare team may use IV fluid therapy when dehydration is severe, vomiting prevents drinking, or a person cannot safely replace losses by mouth.
Keep track of drinking, vomiting, urine, alertness, and the frequency of stools. Do not rely on soft drinks or very sugary drinks as the only replacement. More information is available in the diarrhoea, oral rehydration therapy, and IV fluid therapy pages.
Do not wait with these signs
Seek emergency care for fainting, confusion, extreme drowsiness, cold or clammy skin, inability to drink, repeated vomiting, very little or no urine, severe weakness, or worsening dizziness. Urgent assessment is also needed when a child, older adult, or pregnant person has ongoing watery diarrhoea. Take the oral rehydration product and note when symptoms began if possible.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how to judge whether hydration is improving, what fluid amount is suitable, whether salt replacement needs monitoring, and which medicines should be avoided. Ask what follow-up is needed after symptoms settle and how to prevent another exposure.

Questions people ask
Why can cholera become serious so quickly?
Watery diarrhoea and vomiting can remove large amounts of fluid and salts in a short time, leaving too little circulating fluid for the body.
Can complications be treated?
Clinicians can replace fluid and salts through oral or IV treatment, while monitoring circulation, urine, alertness, and ongoing losses.
