Types of cholelithiasis: what the terms mean

Gallstones are often grouped by their main material, such as cholesterol or pigment, although a person cannot identify the type from symptoms alone. Clinicians also describe stones by location: they may be in the gallbladder or in a bile duct. Another useful distinction is symptomatic versus silent disease. A silent stone causes no clear gallbladder attack, while a symptomatic stone may cause steady upper abdominal pain, Indigestion, Nausea or Vomiting. The classification helps guide follow-up, but the scan and clinical picture are considered together.

Ask the clinician to explain unfamiliar terms such as gallbladder stones, duct stones, sludge or inflammation. Keep a symptom diary and include the pain site, relation to meals, duration and associated changes in urine or stool. Arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms are new, recurring or worsening. Management can range from watching a silent finding to discussing gallbladder removal or bile-duct treatment when obstruction or inflammation is present. Avoid taking a medicine specifically to dissolve stones unless a clinician has prescribed it.

Emergency assessment is appropriate for severe Abdominal Pain, pain that does not settle, fever, jaundice, repeated Vomiting, faintness or confusion. Pain extending to the back can be a feature of Pancreatitis. These symptoms can reflect a blocked duct or infection and should be assessed promptly, regardless of the stone type named on a report.

Ask which type or location is shown, whether there is evidence of inflammation or obstruction, what follow-up is needed, which foods or medicines may aggravate symptoms, and whether a specialist opinion is appropriate.
