Cholelithiasis in pregnancy: what to know

Gallstones are solid pieces that form in the gallbladder. They may cause no symptoms, or a stone may obstruct bile flow and trigger upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or indigestion. Pregnancy can make symptom assessment more complex because nausea and abdominal discomfort have other possible explanations. A clinician may review your pain pattern, examine you and arrange blood tests or an ultrasound, which does not use radiation. A gallstone does not by itself show that pregnancy is in danger, but infection, obstruction or inflammation needs prompt attention.

Record when pain starts, where it is felt, what you ate beforehand and whether fever, dark urine or vomiting occurs. Arrange a GP Consultation for recurring symptoms or a scan result showing stones. Do not start a weight-loss diet or take over-the-counter medicine without checking pregnancy suitability. Your clinician may recommend observation for mild symptoms, pregnancy-compatible pain relief, or hospital treatment when a duct is blocked or the gallbladder is inflamed. Decisions about procedures involve your pregnancy stage, symptoms and the findings.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or persistent Abdominal Pain, fever or chills, yellowing of the skin or eyes, repeated Vomiting, faintness, or inability to keep fluids down. These signs can accompany a blocked bile duct, gallbladder inflammation or Pancreatitis. If you are pregnant and also notice vaginal bleeding, fluid loss or reduced fetal movement, contact your maternity service urgently.

Ask whether the ultrasound shows stones in the gallbladder or bile duct, which medicines are suitable at your pregnancy stage, how symptoms should be monitored, and which maternity or surgical team should be contacted if pain returns.
