Cholecalciferol vitamin D3 oral solution: what to know

The solution contains cholecalciferol, also called vitamin D3, in a liquid that can be measured and swallowed. It may be selected for someone who has difficulty swallowing tablets or needs a particular dose. The concentration differs between products, so the volume in a spoon or syringe is not interchangeable between bottles.

Vitamin D3 supports calcium absorption and bone and muscle health. It is used in vitamin D supplementation plans, but it is not a treatment for every cause of fatigue, pain, or weakness. The clinician may use a blood test and your medical history to choose the schedule.

Read the product directions and use the supplied measuring device. Check the strength and dose each time, shake the bottle if the label says to do so, and record doses if the schedule is intermittent. Do not estimate the dose with a kitchen teaspoon or take another vitamin D product at the same time without advice.

Tell your clinician about kidney disease, kidney stones, high calcium, pregnancy, and medicines or supplements. Keep the bottle out of children's reach. If you miss a dose, follow the label or ask a pharmacist rather than doubling the next dose.

Contact a clinician if you take more than prescribed, the measuring device is missing, or you develop persistent nausea, vomiting, unusual thirst, frequent urination, constipation, or marked weakness. Seek urgent help for severe confusion, collapse, or breathing difficulty after a suspected overdose.
