What should you know about chlorine rash?

Chlorinated water can strip oils from the outer skin barrier. Wet swimwear, rubbing, sweat, and poolside heat may then cause itching, redness, tightness, or small bumps. The timing is a clue, not a diagnosis: a rash that starts after each swim may still be irritation rather than allergy. A rash that spreads beyond contact areas, lasts between swims, forms rings, or affects household contacts needs a broader assessment.

Rinse off promptly with clean lukewarm water, pat the skin dry, and apply a plain fragrance-free moisturiser. Change out of wet swimwear, wash it with a gentle detergent, and avoid scrubbing or fragranced products while the rash is active. Do not apply leftover steroid, antibiotic, or antifungal creams without advice, because the wrong product can mask the pattern or worsen some infections. Record what the rash looks like and how long it lasts.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or widespread raised hives. Obtain prompt medical care for severe pain, pus, fever, blistering, peeling, rapidly spreading redness, or eye involvement. Book a review if symptoms recur, disturb sleep, or do not improve after avoiding the suspected trigger and restoring moisture.

Ask which causes fit the rash's shape and distribution, whether any treatment is needed, and how to protect your skin for future swims. Mention new detergents, lotions, medicines, swimwear, and whether anyone else has symptoms.
