What happens if chlamydia is not treated?

Chlamydia can cause unusual vaginal discharge, painful urination, bleeding between periods or pelvic pain, although many people notice nothing. In people with a uterus and fallopian tubes, infection can develop into pelvic inflammatory disease, which may lead to ongoing pelvic pain or fertility problems. In people with testicles, it can cause pain or swelling around the testicle. A symptom-free period does not show that the infection has cleared.

Arrange STI screening if you may have been exposed or have symptoms. Take prescribed antibiotic treatment exactly as directed and do not share doses or stop early because symptoms improve. Avoid sexual contact until treatment guidance has been completed for you and partners. Tell current or recent partners promptly through a safe method so they can seek testing and care. A clinician can discuss repeat testing when it is useful.

Seek urgent care for severe lower-abdominal or testicular pain, fever, vomiting, faintness or rapidly worsening illness. Prompt assessment is also needed for new pelvic pain, pain during sex, unusual bleeding, discharge or painful urination. These signs can have different causes, but delaying assessment may allow an infection to travel beyond its original site.

Ask what treatment is prescribed, how to take it, whether partners need treatment, when sexual contact can resume, and whether you need follow-up testing. Mention pregnancy, allergies, other medicines and any previous treatment so the plan is safe and complete.
