Chlamydia in your mouth: what to know

Oral chlamydia can occur after sexual contact involving the mouth and an infected area. Throat infection often produces no clear sign. Some people notice a sore throat, redness, swollen glands, or discomfort when swallowing, but these symptoms overlap with common respiratory illnesses. A throat infection is different from genital chlamydia, although the same bacterial infection can be present at more than one site. A positive throat result does not by itself show where or when exposure occurred.

Tell the clinician exactly which sexual contact occurred, because the exposed site guides the sample. A throat swab may be needed; a urine test alone may not detect infection in the throat. Follow the prescribed antibiotic instructions and do not share medication. Pause oral, vaginal, and anal sex until treatment advice has been completed for you and any partners. Partners should receive confidential assessment, and testing for other sexually transmitted infections may also be offered.

Arrange prompt care for a persistent sore throat after a sexual exposure, pus on the tonsils, swollen neck glands, or a partner’s positive result. Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow fluids, rapidly increasing neck swelling, or severe weakness. Those symptoms can signal a different problem requiring immediate assessment.

Ask whether your throat needs a swab, whether genital or rectal testing is also appropriate, when sexual contact can safely resume, and whether partner notification or follow-up testing is recommended.
