How can you get chlamydia?

Short answer
You can get chlamydia through sexual contact with an infected partner, including vaginal, anal, or oral sexual contact.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How transmission happens
Transmission can occur when infected genital fluids contact a partner during sex. Infection may affect the cervix, urethra, rectum, or throat, depending on the contact. It can pass even when the infected person has no symptoms and may occur in a relationship where neither person realised testing was needed.
Chlamydia is not spread by toilet seats, hugging, sharing food, or ordinary household contact. A new symptom such as painful urination, vaginal discharge, or bleeding between periods should be assessed, but it does not by itself show that chlamydia is the cause.
Reducing risk and arranging care
Using condoms or dental dams correctly can reduce exposure during sex. If you have had sexual contact without a barrier, a partner has chlamydia, or you are concerned about a new partner, arrange STI Screening and share the relevant contact history with the clinician.
If testing confirms infection, take the recommended antibiotic treatment as prescribed. Recent partners need clear advice about testing and treatment, and sexual contact should wait until the clinician confirms it is appropriate.
When to seek medical help
Seek prompt assessment for pelvic pain, fever, pain during sex, or unusual bleeding following a possible exposure. An untreated infection can contribute to pelvic inflammatory disease. Get urgent help for severe pain, faintness, vomiting, or heavy bleeding.
Questions to bring
Ask which body sites need testing, whether a partner should be contacted, when to repeat assessment if symptoms remain, and how treatment affects sexual contact.
