Can a handjob spread chlamydia?

Chlamydia usually spreads when infected sexual fluids or mucous membranes contact susceptible genital, rectal or throat tissue. Intact skin on the hand is not the usual route. Risk is harder to judge if fluids were transferred directly to the urethral opening, genitals or another mucous membrane, or if vaginal, anal or oral sex also occurred.

Symptoms such as discharge, painful urination or bleeding between periods may follow chlamydia, but they can also have other causes. Some people have no symptoms, so the event and a partner’s diagnosis matter when deciding about testing.

Book an STI screening discussion if a partner has chlamydia, fluids contacted a mucous membrane, other sexual contact occurred, or symptoms are present. Explain the sequence of contact plainly; this helps the clinician choose useful urine or swab samples.

If chlamydia is diagnosed, take the prescribed antibiotic, avoid sex for the advised period, and ensure partners receive medical advice. Do not self-treat with leftover medication.

Arrange prompt assessment for fever, severe pelvic or lower abdominal pain, testicular pain or swelling, faintness, or unusual bleeding. Seek urgent help if symptoms are severe or worsening, especially during pregnancy.

Ask whether the contact described warrants testing, which exposed sites should be sampled, whether partners need treatment, and when follow-up is required.
