Can kissing spread chlamydia?

Chlamydia is associated with contact between infected mucous membranes or sexual fluids and areas such as the cervix, urethra, rectum or throat. Ordinary kissing is not the typical exposure linked with genital infection. If kissing happened alongside oral, vaginal or anal sex, that wider contact is what a clinician will assess.

Chlamydia can be present without symptoms. When symptoms occur, they may include discharge, painful urination or bleeding between periods. These symptoms have other possible explanations, so they should be assessed rather than attributed to kissing.

If kissing was the only contact and neither person has symptoms or a known diagnosis, chlamydia testing is not usually prompted by the kiss alone. Arrange STI screening if there was additional sexual contact, a partner has chlamydia, or symptoms have appeared.

Be open with the clinician about the sites involved in sexual contact. If infection is found, take the prescribed antibiotic and follow advice about partners and avoiding sex during treatment.

Seek prompt care for severe pelvic pain, fever, faintness, unusual bleeding, or testicular pain or swelling. These symptoms need a clinical assessment regardless of whether kissing was part of the encounter.

Ask whether your full sexual exposure calls for STI screening, whether a throat or genital sample is relevant, and what symptoms should lead to urgent review.
