What type of bacteria causes chlamydia?

Short answer
Chlamydia is caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, a bacterium that can infect genital, rectal and throat tissues.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Organism
- Chlamydia trachomatis is a bacterium.
- Possible sites
- Genital, rectal and throat tissues can be affected.
- Diagnosis
- Testing is needed because symptoms may be absent or nonspecific.
What this bacterium does
Chlamydia trachomatis can enter mucous membranes during sexual contact and multiply within cells. Infection may affect the cervix, urethra, rectum or throat. Many people have no noticeable symptoms, which is why testing can matter even when someone feels well.
When symptoms occur, they can include painful urination, discharge, pelvic discomfort or bleeding between periods. A symptom such as painful urination has several possible causes and does not by itself establish chlamydia.
Testing and treatment
A clinician may recommend a urine sample or swabs from exposed sites. Share the type of sexual contact you had so the right sites are considered. If testing confirms chlamydia, take the prescribed antibiotic exactly as directed and discuss partner notification.
Avoid sexual contact until the clinician says treatment has had time to work and partners have been addressed. Do not use someone else’s medicine or stop early because symptoms improve.
When to seek care promptly
Get prompt care for worsening pelvic or lower abdominal pain, fever, pain during sex, unusual bleeding, testicular pain or swelling, or pain in the side or back. These features can signal infection that needs examination and treatment without delay.
Questions to take along
Ask which samples are needed, whether other STI tests are sensible, how partners should be informed, and what symptoms should trigger a follow-up visit.

Questions people ask
Is chlamydia a virus?
No. Chlamydia is a bacterial infection and is treated with prescribed antibiotics rather than antiviral medicine.
Can chlamydia be present without symptoms?
Yes. A person can have no obvious symptoms, so testing may be useful after a relevant exposure or when a partner has been diagnosed.
