Chipotle food poisoning: symptoms and what to do

Food Poisoning can follow contaminated food or drink, but symptoms after a restaurant meal do not prove which food caused them. Other people who ate the same meal may remain well, and symptoms can begin at different times. Note what you ate, when symptoms started, and whether anyone else is ill.

Fluid loss from diarrhoea or vomiting can lead to dry mouth, dizziness, weakness, or reduced urination. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with a long-term illness can become unwell more quickly.

Take frequent small sips of water or Oral Rehydration Therapy. Rest, and return to simple foods as tolerated. Avoid preparing food for others while you have diarrhoea or vomiting, and wash hands thoroughly after using the toilet.

Do not take antibiotics or anti-diarrhoeal medicine without advice, especially with fever or blood in the stool. If fluids cannot stay down, a clinician may consider IV Fluid Therapy. Keep packaging, receipts, or leftover food only if authorities or clinicians request them; do not taste suspect food.

Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, confusion, fainting, blood in vomit or stool, signs of significant dehydration, or repeated vomiting that prevents drinking. Contact a clinician for fever that persists, symptoms that worsen, or illness in pregnancy, infancy, older age, or with a weakened immune system.
