What should you know about chikungunya virus rash?

Chikungunya commonly presents with sudden [Fever](/symptoms/fever/) and prominent [Joint Pain](/symptoms/joint-pain/); [Muscle Aches](/symptoms/muscle-aches/) may occur as well. Note whether the rash is itchy or painful, where it started, whether it spreads, and when it appeared relative to the fever or any new medicine. A rash with a compatible illness pattern may support clinical assessment, but it is not specific enough to diagnose the infection.

Keep the skin cool, avoid scratching, and use gentle, fragrance-free products. Do not start a new cream or medicine without checking that it is suitable, particularly if the rash began after a treatment. Take clear photographs in good light and record symptom timing. Get urgent help if the rash comes with breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, unusual bleeding, blistering, skin peeling, or involvement of the eyes or mouth. Seek prompt medical advice for fever with a rapidly changing rash, severe joint pain, repeated vomiting or difficulty drinking. These warning signs need assessment regardless of whether chikungunya is suspected.

Ask whether the rash pattern and timing suggest chikungunya or another illness, whether any current medicine could be contributing, which skin treatments are safe, and what changes should trigger urgent review.
