What should you know about chikungunya virus?

Infected mosquitoes pass the virus to people when they bite. Most symptoms begin after an interval following exposure and may include fever, joint pain, muscle aches, headache, tiredness, or a skin rash. Joint symptoms can be especially troublesome and may continue after the fever settles.

A symptom such as fever does not by itself identify chikungunya because several infections can look similar. Travel history, mosquito exposure, examination, and testing when appropriate help a clinician judge the cause.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and use only fever or pain medicines that a clinician or pharmacist considers suitable for you. Protect yourself from further mosquito bites while unwell so mosquitoes are less likely to acquire the virus and pass it on.

Arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms are significant, you have recently travelled, or joint pain is limiting movement. Tell the clinician when symptoms began, where you travelled, and whether others became unwell.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, unusual bleeding, or a rapidly worsening condition. Older adults, infants, pregnant people, and those with long-term illnesses may need earlier advice.

Ask whether your symptoms fit chikungunya or another infection, whether testing is useful now, which medicines are safe with your conditions, and what to do if joint pain continues.
