What is the mosquito that spreads chikungunya called?

Chikungunya is mainly spread by Aedes mosquitoes, especially Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, which can transmit the virus through a bite. You do not need to identify the exact mosquito to protect yourself. Bite prevention matters around homes, workplaces and travel locations where these mosquitoes may be present.

Aedes mosquitoes commonly breed in small containers holding still water, such as buckets, plant saucers or discarded items. They may bite during daylight, so protection should not be limited to nighttime. An infected bite can be followed by fever, joint pain, muscle aches, headache or rash, although symptoms vary and cannot confirm the cause.

Use an appropriate insect repellent as directed, wear clothing that covers arms and legs, and keep doors or windows screened where possible. Empty, cover or clean containers that collect water around your home. If you have chikungunya symptoms, take extra care to avoid bites so local mosquitoes do not acquire the virus from you.
