Is chikungunya malaria?

Chikungunya is not malaria: they are different mosquito-borne infections caused by different organisms and requiring different medical assessment. Chikungunya is caused by a virus, while malaria is caused by parasites. Both can involve fever, so a person should not rely on a symptom label or self-treatment after travel.

Chikungunya often features prominent joint pain, stiffness and muscle aches alongside fever. Malaria can also begin with fever and may become serious, so the travel route, timing, exposure and examination all matter. Having joint pain does not rule malaria in or out, and having a fever does not identify chikungunya by itself.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for fever after visiting a malaria area or another place with mosquito-borne illness. Tell the clinician where you travelled, when you returned, when symptoms started and whether you took prevention medicine. Drink fluids if you can and avoid taking leftover antibiotics or another person’s malaria treatment. Continue mosquito-bite precautions while unwell.

Seek urgent help for fever with confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, seizure, unusual bleeding or inability to drink. Do this even if joint pain suggests chikungunya, because severe mosquito-borne illness needs rapid evaluation. People who are pregnant, very young, older or medically vulnerable should obtain advice early.

Ask which tests are needed for chikungunya, malaria or other causes of fever, how quickly results are expected and which warning signs require emergency care. Provide your full travel and medication history, including any prevention tablets, vaccines or recent treatment.
