Is chikungunya contagious?

Chikungunya is mainly transmitted when an infected mosquito bites a person, not through routine casual contact between people. A mosquito can acquire the virus by biting an infected person and may then pass it on through a later bite. This makes bite prevention especially useful while someone has symptoms.

A person with chikungunya may have fever, joint pain and muscle aches. The key concern is that mosquitoes can bite during the illness and continue the transmission cycle. Sharing a room, food or household items is not the usual route of spread. Rare transmission routes may need individual medical advice, including situations involving pregnancy or blood exposure.

If you may have chikungunya, avoid mosquito bites during the period of illness: use a suitable repellent, wear clothing that covers skin, use screens or nets and remove standing water where mosquitoes can breed. Household members should use their own bite-prevention measures. Do not donate blood while unwell or until a healthcare professional says it is appropriate.

Contact a GP if fever follows travel or mosquito exposure, or if joint pain makes normal activities difficult. Get urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, collapse, confusion, severe dehydration, seizure, unusual bleeding or extreme sleepiness. Seek advice promptly if the affected person is a young infant, an older adult or has a serious long-term condition.
