What should you know about chikungunya?
Updated

Short answer
Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral illness that can cause fever, marked joint pain, muscle aches and tiredness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Cause
- A virus spread by infected mosquitoes
- Common concerns
- Fever, joint pain, muscle aches and fatigue
- Care focus
- Fluids, rest, comfort and mosquito-bite prevention
What chikungunya means
Infected mosquitoes pass the virus to people when they bite. Symptoms often begin after an interval following the bite and may include a sudden fever, aching or swollen joints, headache, muscle discomfort, rash and reduced energy. Joint pain can be strong and may continue after the fever improves. Similar symptoms can occur with other infections, so symptoms alone cannot confirm chikungunya. A clinician considers your symptoms, travel or local exposure and examination findings when deciding whether testing is appropriate.
What you can do now
Rest, drink fluids regularly and choose light meals if your appetite is low. Keep painful joints gently moving within comfort, while avoiding strenuous activity. Use medicines only as directed on the label or by a clinician; some pain medicines may not be suitable if another infection has not been excluded. Reduce further mosquito bites by using repellent, wearing covering clothing and using screens or nets, especially while you are unwell. Arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms are significant, persistent or difficult to manage.
When to seek care
Seek prompt medical advice for severe or worsening pain, trouble drinking, repeated vomiting, unusual bleeding, confusion, breathing difficulty, fainting or marked weakness. Extra caution is sensible for babies, older adults, pregnant people and anyone with a long-term medical condition. A fever that does not settle, or joint symptoms that limit ordinary movement, also deserves assessment. Emergency help is appropriate when breathing or consciousness is affected.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit chikungunya or another illness, whether testing is useful, which pain-relief options fit your health history, and how to protect people around you from mosquito bites.

Questions people ask
Can chikungunya cause joint pain after the fever improves?
Yes. Joint pain may continue after the fever settles and should be assessed if it is severe, persistent or limiting movement.
How is chikungunya diagnosed?
A clinician uses your symptoms, examination and exposure history, and may recommend testing when it would clarify the diagnosis.
