What should you know about chicken skin texture?

The bumps may be skin-coloured, pink, or red and can feel like fine sandpaper. They commonly appear on the outer upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks. Keratosis pilaris is a frequent explanation and is not caused by poor hygiene. Folliculitis can look similar, particularly when bumps are tender, itchy, pus-filled, or clustered around irritated hairs. A close look at the distribution, colour, and symptoms helps a clinician tell these apart.

Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and apply a moisturiser soon after bathing. Products containing urea, lactic acid, or salicylic acid may soften built-up scale when used as directed. Introduce one active product at a time, because over-exfoliating can cause stinging and more redness. Avoid scrubbing with rough gloves, picking at bumps, or shaving over inflamed skin. Improvement is gradual, and maintenance is often needed to keep the surface smooth.

Arrange a medical assessment if the area becomes painful, hot, rapidly more swollen, or filled with pus, or if redness spreads. Seek prompt care for fever or feeling unwell with a worsening skin eruption. A clinician can assess persistent bumps that do not respond to gentle care and check whether another follicle condition is present.
