Chicken skin pimples: how to tell what the bumps may be

Keratosis pilaris feels dry and grainy, with many small bumps clustered around follicles. It may itch mildly but is not usually filled with pus. Folliculitis involves inflammation of a follicle and can produce soreness, itch, redness, or pustules. Acne can also resemble these changes, especially where oil and friction are involved. Location, timing, and symptoms help a clinician separate them.

Use a gentle cleanser and a non-comedogenic moisturiser. Do not pop or scratch the bumps, and avoid harsh brushes that can increase inflammation. For persistent roughness, ask a pharmacist or clinician about a moisturiser with urea, lactic acid, or salicylic acid. Stop an active product if it causes burning, cracking, or marked redness.

Seek medical advice if spots become painful, hot, swollen, repeatedly pus-filled, or leave spreading redness. Prompt care is appropriate with fever or feeling unwell. Arrange a routine review when the eruption persists, spreads, scars, or does not respond to gentle care, because different causes need different treatment.
